Council for Research Education

The Faculty of Medicine aims to strengthen its research education.

Through strengthened supervision, closer follow-up of candidates and further development of the course portfolio, the research education intends to be forward-looking, internationally attractive and integrated into active research environments.

The faculty's Council for research education (Forskerutdanningsutvalget) has as its objective to develop and quality assure the research education in accordance with current rules and regulations.


The Council for research education has both a formal and a more operational role:

Formal role

The Council for research education

  • is the faculty’s strategic organ for research education
  • is the link between the office of the dean, the faculty administration, the institutes and the PhD candidates
  • shall ensure that the faculty’s research education is in line with academic development
  • shall strive to make the faculties at the University of Oslo (UiO) correspond with each other
  • shall facilitate  national and international cooperation between the universities
  • is responsible for quality assurance of the research education and follows up the various responsibilities of the faculty, institute, supervisor and candidate.


The Council for research education

  • shall keep the faculty’s supplementary rules up to date and ensure that they are followed
  • shall further develop the faculty’s training of supervisory skills
  • shall maintain consistent admission practice, has the formal responsibility for admission and sets the admission requirements
  • shall keep the course portfolio updated academically and ensure that it reflects the faculty’s academic breadth
  • ensure the quality of the PhD examination (thesis, trial lecture and public defence)
  • assist in cases of conflict when the institutes require help
  • is responsible for preparing the faculty’s annual quality reports for research education


  • The Council for research education is led by the Deputy Dean of Research and consists of the institutes’ PhD coordinators, and a representative for the PhD candidates (MedDocs/PhD forum).
  • The faculty administration acts as secretariat. Section Manager Ingrid Sogner and Team Leader of the Research education team Merethe Bremer participate from the faculty administration.
