Sammendrag

Persons with rheumatoid arthritis have a 1.5-2-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease compared to persons in the general population. Cardiovascular risk calculators designed for use in the general population underestimate the risk of cardiovascular disease in persons with rheumatoid arthritis. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors do not explain the increased cardiovascular disease risk in persons with rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammatory markers and measures of rheumatoid arthritis disease activity also explain part of the increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, incorporating these additional measures into a rheumatoid arthritis-specific cardiovascular risk calculator has proven difficult.
