Global Health Day 2017 in Trondheim

On the 24th of October, the Centre for Global Health attended the 8th annual Global Health Day hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), St. Olav’s Hospital and Central Norway Regional Health in Trondheim.

Professor Christopher B-Lynch

The proceedings were centered on maternal- and newborn-health (MNH) as well as equity in healthcare delivery and programme implementation. Prominent national and international researchers, clinicians and programme leaders were invited to highlight successes and progress, but also current and future challenges to address in MNH, equity and achieving the Agenda 2030.

Professor Flemming Konradsen

A highlight of the proceedings was a talk by Professor Christopher B-Lynch, originally from Sierra Leone, who had spent his professional life as a Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecological Surgeon. Professor B-Lynch is best known for a life-saving procedure, which has been used to treat thousands of women with severe postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) (the B-Lynch Brace Suture), and for which he had received several awards. He presented an interesting and tragic historical account of mortality from PPH, from the 3rd wife of Henry VIII, Jane Seymour to Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales; and highlighted key factors of care for pregnant women presenting with complications.

Other presenters from Sierra Leone, Nepal, India, South Africa, Denmark, the Netherlands, USA and Norway gave the audience an insight into their research and hope for saving lives of women and children when they are most vulnerable - during pregnancy and at birth.

The seminar was also a platform for the introduction of collaborative Centres supporting global health research, such as the Centre for Global Health Inequalities research (CHAIN) and Global Health Norway (GHN).
