Sammendrag

An old tradition in the Mozambican health system is the appointment of newly graduated doctors to perform both clinical and managerial tasks in the health districts. The question brought in by the research is whether those doctors are ready for management and leadership roles in the national health system in Mozambique.

Discourse analysis was applied on reports written by last year medical students to verify what challenges exist in that appointment. Gidden’s structuration theory is used as a lens to understand the interaction between the students’ sociology (the one associated with being educated in a city setting) and the rural sociology (the one compounded by the way of life, expectations and realities of district communities) they face in the rural internship. This lens is also used to verify the effect of tutors on students’ perceptions of the rural sociology.

The reports had significant technical problems (text and graphs). They also show students had difficulty describing, exploring and getting integrated in the rural context, which has implications in their understanding of the rural milieu. The occurrence of management terms as well tutor’s motivation was minimal. Two models (process and context) were developed to encapsulate the finds related to student’s representation of the district as well as their exposure to management.
