Academic Interests

I am a physicist interested in biophysics, especially the biophysics of the brain. Most of my work is within neuroscience, but I have also developed computer models of the circulatory system.

Background

I have a PhD from 2007 within biophysics/computational neuroscience. The task was to understand and decipher the signals in networks of neurons. In principle, every thought, idea and perceived sensory input corresponds to electrochemical activity within neurons. The electrical signals can be recorded by small recording electrodes implanted into the brain, a microscopic form of EEG recordings. The topic of my thesis was to relate such recorded electric activity to the underlying neural activity, to develop methods for interpretation of brain activity applied to signals recorded within the somatosensory cortex. Before my PhD studies I was studying physics, especially quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, and I was educated as a civil engineer in physics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. My thesis was on the topic of Casimir energy, i.e., on vacuum energy and how this energy generate forces acting on the material surrounding the vacuum.

I have also worked as a consultant for Accenture.

I have coauthored three book chapters (Principles of Neural CodingHandbook of Neural Activity MeasurementAn anthology of developments in clinical engineering and bioimpedance) and more than 20 journal papers in international peer reviewed journals.
