Projects

Projects:

Molecular mechanisms involved in glutamine transport. Functional characterization of the Slc38 family of amino acid transporters and their involvement in pathology.

Molecular mechanisms in delirium and dementia. This project involves a consortium consisting of basic scientists and clinicians. It aims at investigating molecular mechanisms involved in the development of delirium and dementia, identifying risk factors and mechanisms underlying the development of disease, and developing novel approaches to diagnose and/or treat these conditions.

Glutamine transport in the development of hepatic encephalopathy (Collaboration with Mossakowski Medical Research Centre Polish Academy of Sciences). We are investigating whether aberrant glutamine transport and/or changes in the glutamate/GABA-glutamine cycle is involved in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy.

Potential involvement of glutamine metabolism and glutamine transporters in the regulation of insulin secretion in the islets of Langerhans? We study molecular mechanisms involved in regulation of insulin secretion by glutamine and other amino acids.

Pathophysiological roles of amino acids and amino acid transporters in neurological diseases, such as epilepsy. We study animal models for different neurological diseases as well as aim to identify genetic causes of rare diseases in humans and intervene clinically.
