Natural Killer Cells

Natural killer (NK) cells eliminate cancer cells and cells infected with several viruses and bacteria, while sparing normal cells .

NK-cell (green, left) binds to a cancer cell and kills it within minutes. Apoptosis is visible by "blebbing".

About the group

The main focus of this research group is to understand at the molecular and cellular levels how NK cells discriminate between these different target cells. This includes identification of NK cell receptors, signalling pathways and linked effector mechanisms, ligand molecules recognized by NK receptors as well as the mechanisms that lead to ligand expression.
