Synapses

Nerve cells communicate with other nerve cells and with muscle fibers by means of synapses. Synapses are dynamic structures that are actively maintained, and they can change to meet new demands.

About the group

Nerve and muscle cells are studied to obtain information about their function and ability to adapt to altered patterns of use. Patterns of activity are controlled in vivo, and cells are subsequently examined in vitro using anatomical, electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques.

A main interest is the formation, maintenance and adjustments of synaptic connections between nerve cells, and between nerve cells and muscle fibers.
