Aldring er en fundamental prosess medvirkende til utvikling av en rekke sykdommer i mennesket, slik som skrøpelighet, kreft og flere nevrodegenerative sykdommer, inkludert Alzheimers sykdom.

Den globale populasjonen av eldre anslås å øke betydelig i dette århundret; innen år 2100 vil 25% av verdens befolkning være over 65 år gamle. Dette representerer en internasjonal bekymring på grunn av de alvorlige sosioøkonomiske og helsemessige utfordringene knyttet til aldring.

Vi fascineres av å utforske de grunnleggende molekylære mekanismene for menneskelig aldring og aldersrelatert sykdom, og har et endelig mål om å utvikle intervensjonsstrategier for å forbedre menneskers levetid og «healthspan» (den friske og aktive delen av livet.)

Det er tre store forskningsinteresser i min lab, dette inkluderer 1) NAD+ og aldring; 2) molekylære mekanismer for mitofagi; og 3) kompromittert mitofagi ved Alzheimers sykdom.

Gruppen besitter en enorm kunnskap om aldring, og kan med en rekke internasjonale samarbeidspartnere angripe fra mange kanter. Denne tverrfaglige strategien gjør at vi kan arbeide bredt, vinne mer kunnskap og oppnå fruktbare resultater.
