Strand’s thesis addresses a basic problem in contemporary philosophy of mind; how can mental phenomena be causally efficacious in a physical universe? Jaegwon Kim’s causal exclusion argument brings this question into sharp focus. In brief, Kim’s argument says that if mental causes are not identical to physical entities they are excluded from the causal nexus by purely physical causes. The thesis gives a systematic discussion of the challenge to mental causation posed by this argument.
The thesis consists of four individual papers and an introduction that provides background and motivation for the arguments in the individual papers. The main aims and conclusions are as follows. In the first paper it is argued that Kim’s reductive account of mental causation conflicts with our standard understanding of macro causation. This is because it involves a radical revision of our understanding of the patterns of counterfactual dependence between macro causal relata. The second paper presents counterexamples to the causal exclusion principle, and thereby shows that the proponent of the causal exclusion argument needs a strong, and questionable, version of the principle of the causal closure of physics in order to establish his or her conclusion. In the third paper, Strand contrasts Stephen Yablo’s account of mental causation with a token-identity based account, and argues that the choice of account depends on their merits with respect to issues outside the specific mental causation debate. Finally, in the fourth paper, Strand spells out a version of physical realizationalism that explains how the causal efficacy of realizable mental properties and events is compatible with central physicalistic tenets.
