The summer course in International Community Health (ICH) is offered as part of UiO's International Summer School. The course provides 10 ECTS credits and spans four weeks from 29 of June to 24 of July 2026.

"This is an important opportunity also for UiO students and other Norwegians with an interest in the topic. The course provides new knowledge about global health," says course leader Ahmed Madar at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, Institute of Health and Society.

Madar shares the course leadership with colleague Mekdes Gebremariam. The two course leaders promise that the program will provide students with a unique experience.

"There is a fantastic atmosphere on campus during the summer. The International Summer School adds an extra dimension to the studies. Here, students meet from all over the world, participants with different experiences within global health," Madar says.

Apply by March 15

The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic field of global health, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing key global health challenges.

Core topics include health disparities, the global burden of disease, universal health coverage, communicable and non-communicable diseases, child health, sexual and reproductive health, pandemics, One Health, immigrant health, and global research ethics.

"These are explored through engaging lectures and collaborative group discussions,” Madar explains.

The target group for the course includes students, healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, planners, and program officers in governmental and non-governmental organizations both in Norway and abroad.

"It is precisely this rich exchange of experiences and perspectives between the students that creates a valuable learning process. The program also organizes visits to relevant Norwegian institutions," Madar says.
