Special Focus Areas

At any given time, CGH will identify special focus areas to capitalize on the skills and competencies of individual staff or affiliates. The selected special focus areas may vary from year to year and will follow the ambitions of the CGH.

Women in Global Health (WGH) Norway is hosted by the CGH and is part of the international movement, Women in Global Health. WGH Norway serves as an independent country chapter. Together with WGH Global and the 40+ WGH country chapters, it makes up the WGH movement.

Gender equality is both a goal and a means to contribute towards healthy lives for all, and it is key to obtaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Gender equality is regarded as key to poverty reduction and development by the Norwegian government, and it is one of the four cross-cutting pillars of its development policy (the others being human rights, climate and the environment, and anti-corruption).

By providing a collaborative space for leadership, facilitating specific education and training, harnessing support and commitment from the global community, the network is demanding change for gender transformative leadership. The global movement including its national chapters brings together all genders and backgrounds to achieve gender equality in global health leadership. It is a platform to connect, further strengthen, and advocate for gender equality in global health within academia and in the public and private sectors, responding directly to SDG 5, achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

As a Special Focus Area, Women in Global Health Norway will:

  • work with the newly established Crosscutting Theme, Gender in Global Health at the CGH;
  • work with the Special Focus Area: Global Maternal and Child Health;
  • support the CGH’s ambition to advance SDGs;
  • build on the capacity development in education facilitated through the CGH’s partners;
  • further mobilize national movements that will enhance the foundations for the development of intellectual resources, competent work forces, visionary leaders, gender equality, human rights, and democracy in selected mentor countries by linking the national chapters to the vast networks of the CGH partners;
  • develop webinars for capacity development and strengthening of the position of human resources in global health; and
  • have a distinct emphasis on the interplay of especially SDG 3 (good health), SDG 4 (good education), and SDG 5 (gender equality), while advancing the agenda of diverse, gender-balanced leadership.
