The EU-OperA project published the paper "Human deskilling in medical artificial intelligence: prohibited or permissible under the EU Artificial Intelligence Act?" this week in Nature Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The paper is commenting how the results from a study published earlier this year may have legal implications.
The EU Artificial Intelligence Act
The EU-OperA project has previously published (2025) the paper "Endoscopist deskilling risk after exposure to artificial intelligence in colonoscopy: a multicentre, observational study", which found a deskilling effect from the use of AI in colonoscopy procedures. The paper published this week by researchers affiliated with the EU-OperA project is investigating these findings in a legal perspective, specifically in relation to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. First author is Sara Gerke at The College of Law at the University of Illinois, USA. The paper was authored in collaboration with the leader of the OperA project professor Yuichi Mori at the Clinical Effectiveness Research Group at the University of Oslo, and Cesare Hassan at the Department of Gastroenterology, IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy.
