There is a risk of fragmenting the main purpose of nursing leadership - to lead nursing care and ministering to the patient and next of kin when the first line managers (FLM) are exposed to multiple demands.

Om prosjektet

The study has a retrospective, explorative, descriptive design; combining qualitative and quantitative data, and with and overall hermeneutic approach searching the interpretation of meaning in relation to context intending to explore, describe and understand.

Study 1: What is caring in nursing leadership- from the nurse leader’s perspective?

Study 2: What characterizes the first line managers’ competence in homecare services in Norwegian municipalities?

Study 3: Which arenas or tools do FLM have (and need) to improve nursing care in home care services in the municipality?

Prosjektets mål

The overall purpose is to explore, describe and understand nursing leadership from a caring science perspective in the context of municipal healthcare, and to develop a theoretical model for further research focused on the improvement of nursing care.

Prosjektets bakgrunn

Clinical tasks and administration are often prioritized before leadership and development of nursing care. First line managers (FLM) is traditionally recruited from skilled staff nurses, without intention of becoming leaders, with limited management skills and competence perceived as at a medium degree, while the importance of management in healthcare is highlighted. Recruitment and management affects FLM commitment, and consequently the patient care. This implicates a need to explore nursing leadership from a caring science perspective in the context of municipal healthcare services based on factors proven crucial for management.

Prosjektets tittel
