Tidlig diagnose og behandling av leddgikt

Prosjektet omhandler tidlig diagnose og skreddersydd medikamentell behandling av leddgikt.

Om prosjektet

Prosjektet knytter molekylær forskning til pasientbehandling, og har som mål å utvikle diagnostiske metoder og individuelt tilpassede medisiner for behandling av den autoimmune sykdommen leddgikt. Leddgikt er en kronisk betennelsessykdom, hvor hvite blodceller anriper og ødelegger fleksible ledd. Sykdomsårsaken er ikke kjent, og man kjenner ikke til noen kur. Til tross for dette vet man at tidlig og massiv behandling av pasientene er det mest effektive for å dempe symptomene over tid.

Medikamentene som brukes mot leddgikt i dag er blant annet kraftige medisiner som også benyttes ved behandling av kreft, og som ofte har alvorlige bivirkninger. Skålhegg og hans samarbeidspartnere ønsker derfor å se på mulighetene for å utvikle medisiner som spesifikt hindrer hvite betennelsesceller i å formere seg.
