Hanne-Cathrin Flinstad Harbo

I am professor of Neurology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oslo (UiO) and Head and senior consultant at Department of Neurology at Division of Neuroscience at Oslo University Hospital (OUH).
Team Flinstad Harbo
I am happy to be nominated as a candidate for the Dean position in the election that will be held at The Faculty of Medicine in September 2022. I have established a very strong team that will work together with me. Please see web-side of the Faculty of Medicine to read our full election programme.
Information about our platform
You are invited to attend these meetings to learn more about our platform program, please see details below:
- General meeting with election debate for students and employees
- Short online lunch meetings with team Flinstad Harbo
- Open meetings with team Flinstad Harbo theme: What is important for you?.
Our candidacy was first presented by Uniforum on 20.5.22: Dean candidate Hanne Flinstad Harbo will give new life to the Faculty of Medicine.
In recent months, we have had a series of preparatory meetings with people in key roles at the Faculty of Medicine: student organisations, doctors in scientific positions, administrative staff, research and education leaders at Ahus and OUS, as well as managers at the institutes.
Our dean team and our main priorities were presented by Uniforum 16.6.22 CHRONICLE: Hanne Flinstad Harbo will do the following if she becomes Dean of Medicine | Fagpressenytt. We have also engaged in the debate concerning the funding of Norwegian research in Khrono on 21.7.22 What will happen to research in Norway going forward? (khrono.no) .
At the end of the nomination deadline, we are presenting our full election platform. We will build on the work and planning developed at the Faculty of Medicine by former deaneries and at the University of Oslo centrally, but our program has some clear priorities for the future.
In addition to the debate meeting organised by the Medical Faculty on 5 September, our team invites you to:
Short online lunch meetings on 22, 24 and 26 August from 11.30–12.00. We will give a brief presentation of our election platform, before answering questions and listening to input. Anyone can attend the meetings using the following links:

Short summary from the program of Team Flinstad Harbo
Vision for the Faculty of Medicine:
Outstanding and innovative research and education for the benefit of the individual and society.
Our main goals for the Faculty of Medicine:
1) Strengthen the faculty as a leading institution for studies and research and as an active social actor
2) Develop the faculty in line with new knowledge and the needs of the society
3) Improve the organisation at the faculty and ensure good interaction with units, employees, students and other partners
Our tools:
Promote: We will improve and use forms of collaboration and communication that ensure open processes and make the work at the Faculty of Medicine more visible both within the organisation and externally to our partners and the general population.
Involve and collaborate: We will stimulate collaboration both internally and with external partners. We will ensure that staff and students become involved in the development and management of the faculty.
Decide, implement, evaluate: We will base our decisions on open, time-limited processes, implement measures, evaluate results and, and when required, follow up with necessary corrections.
Please see the webpages of the Faculty of Medicine for more information about our program.

Scientific interests
Both as Professor of Neurology and recent Deputy Head at Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo and as current Head of the Department of Neurology at Oslo University Hospital, I have a broad interest in medicine, research, education and leadership, and of course especially in brain health and neurology.
Both clinically and in research my work is mainly focused on diagnosis and treatment of neuroinflammatory diseases, especially MS.I am now deputy leader of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research group at UiO / OUH, and I act as PI and project leader of ongoing MS research projects. The MS research group aims to identify characteristics and susceptibility factors of MS, and to contribute to a better understanding of the disease and development of better treatments.
We perform clinical and epidemiological studies, MRI studies, genetic studies and functional molecular studies in collaboration with national and international research partners and Networks.
Currently I am work-package leader and on the board of the EU-Horizon 2020-funded project "MultipleMS" and the Biotek 2021 funded project "Sys4MS". I am the main contact for our affiliation with Ospedale San Raffaele, Milan, Italy in the MAGNIMS (Magnetic Resonance Imaging in MS) network.
