Our research

Obesity is a major health challenge worldwide, and keeping weight off after successfully losing weight remains difficult.

Even with lifestyle changes, surgery, or after stopping weight-loss medicines, many people regain weight over time.

Understanding the mechanisms of weight regain is important for developing better and more lasting treatments for obesity.

Research goals and objectives

CORA focuses on the emerging concept of “adipose tissue memory”, the idea that adipose tissue residing cells may retain a memory of previous obesity, even after successful weight loss. These changes may contribute to the risk of regaining weight.

We investigate whether this “memory” plays a role in weight regain and whether it can be targeted to help people to maintain their weight loss.

What we do

CORA brings together clinical studies with pre-clinical laboratory research to better understand the causes of weight regain.

We study people with obesity, investigate biological mechanisms in adipose tissue and experimental models, and search for markers that may help identify people at higher risk of regaining weight.

Through a translational bedside-to-bench-to-bedside approach, our long-term goal is to develop better and more personalized tools to prevent weight regain, identify novel targets for obesity treatment, and help people achieve and maintain lasting weight loss.
