Mapping cerebellar morphology in 15q11.2 CNV carriers using normative modeling
Nov. 4, 2026 1:00 AM
Copy number variations (CNVs) at the 15q11.2 locus of the human genome have been associated with altered brain structure and increased risk for neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. The cerebellum is increasingly seen as a crucial brain region for neurodevelopmental conditions, yet the effects of 15q11.2 CNVs on cerebellar morphology remain largely unclear. Importantly, 15q11.2 CNVs shows reduced or incomplete penetrance (meaning that not all CNV carriers are affected) and variable...

Estimating bone marrow adiposity from head MRI and identifying its genetic architecture
Nov. 4, 2026 1:00 AM
Bone marrow (BM) adiposity changes radically through the lifespan, but this phenomenon is poorly characterized and understood in humans. Large datasets of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the head have been collected to study the human brain, but also contain unexploited information about other organs. We developed an artificial neural network that localizes calvarial BM in T1-weighted MRI head scans, enabling us to study its composition in several large MRI datasets, and to model...

Cancer risk among individuals with mental illness - a systematic review and meta-analysis of nordic register-based prospective studies
Oct. 30, 2026 1:00 AM
Although cancer patients have a high burden of mental illness, it is less clear whether patients with mental illness experience a higher-than-expected cancer risk. This systematic review investigated the associations between a wide range of types of mental illness and subsequent cancer risk. Five electronic databases were searched for articles published from database initiation to October 24, 2024. Studies using nationwide Nordic register data to conduct a prospective analysis of the association...

Alzheimer's disease genetics converges on microglial and neuronal dysregulation
Oct. 29, 2026 1:00 AM
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, with global case numbers projected to reach 153 million in 2050¹. AD is highly heritable, with twin-based heritability estimates of 60-80%². Although 1,200 causal loci are predicted to exist for AD³, approximately 80 loci have been associated with AD in two recent studies^(4,5). Low single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based heritability estimates have prompted the suggestion that little further common-variant risk remains to be...

Molecular Underpinnings of Retinal Traits Shared with Major Psychiatric Disorders
Oct. 24, 2026 2:00 AM
Recent large-scale studies have enabled new knowledge about genetic underpinnings of morphological and electrophysiological alterations of the retina. Variation in retinal traits, often of neurodevelopmental origin, have been linked to major psychiatric disorders (MPDs). Here, we investigate the genetic overlap between MPDs and key retinal traits to identify underlying molecular mechanisms. We obtained genome-wide associations studies data for bipolar disorder (BD), major depression (MD),...

Genetic and behavioural architecture of childhood eating behaviour and links to obesity risk
Oct. 24, 2026 2:00 AM
CONCLUSIONS: Childhood appetitive traits capture a substantial proportion of genetic susceptibility to adiposity through distinct eating behaviour pathways (under standard mediation assumptions). These effects are primarily driven by the child's own genotype rather than indirect parental influences, positioning appetite as a plausible, biologically grounded target for early obesity prevention.

Distinct profiles of white matter diffusivity in obesity and bipolar disorders: An ENIGMA bipolar disorders study in 2166 individuals
Oct. 24, 2026 2:00 AM
CONCLUSIONS: We found FA and MD are weakly associated, providing complementary information, and there are unique associations between specific diffusivity measures and clinical predictors. Treatment with antiepileptics may inflate the statistical effects of BD on white matter. By using all diffusivity measures and accounting for additional clinical factors, we can gain new insights into brain correlates of severe mental illness.

Psychiatric genetic liability is associated with the severity of COVID-19 and other acute respiratory infections: an observational study across five Northern European countries
Oct. 23, 2026 2:00 AM
CONCLUSIONS: Shared genetics may contribute to the link between psychiatric conditions and respiratory infection severity in community settings. Our results underscore the role of psychiatric genetic liability, beyond diagnosed psychiatric disorders, in contributing to both COVID-19 and other respiratory infection severity. These findings provide insights that may improve future risk stratification and public health strategies targeting respiratory viruses.
