Longitudinal Brain Changes After Stroke and the Association With Cognitive Decline
20. juni 2022 02:00
CONCLUSION: Atrophy in the ipsilesional hemisphere was greater than in the contralesional hemisphere over time. This effect was found to be more prominent in the right hemisphere, pointing to a possible higher resilience to stroke of the left hemisphere. Lastly, greater atrophy of the cortex and subcortex, as well as larger stroke volume, were associated with worse cognition over time and should be included in risk assessments of cognitive decline after stroke.

A large, curated, open-source stroke neuroimaging dataset to improve lesion segmentation algorithms
17. juni 2022 02:00
Accurate lesion segmentation is critical in stroke rehabilitation research for the quantification of lesion burden and accurate image processing. Current automated lesion segmentation methods for T1-weighted (T1w) MRIs, commonly used in stroke research, lack accuracy and reliability. Manual segmentation remains the gold standard, but it is time-consuming, subjective, and requires neuroanatomical expertise. We previously released an open-source dataset of stroke T1w MRIs and manually-segmented...

Impact of childhood trauma on antipsychotic effectiveness in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A prospective, pragmatic, semi-randomized trial
16. juni 2022 02:00
Antipsychotic medications are generally effective in ameliorating psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). Identifying predictors associated with poor treatment response is important for a personalized treatment approach. Childhood trauma (CT) may have a general and differential effect on the effectiveness of different types of antipsychotics in SSDs. The Bergen-Stavanger-Trondheim-Innsbruck (BeSt InTro) study is a pragmatic, researcher-initiated, semi-randomized trial. The...

A comparison of intracranial volume estimation methods and their cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with age
16. juni 2022 02:00
Intracranial volume (ICV) is frequently used in volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, both as a covariate and as a variable of interest. Findings of associations between ICV and age have varied, potentially due to differences in ICV estimation methods. Here, we compared five commonly used ICV estimation methods and their associations with age. T1-weighted cross-sectional MRI data was included for 651 healthy individuals recruited through the NORMENT Centre (mean age = 46.1 years,...

Distributed genetic architecture across the hippocampal formation implies common neuropathology across brain disorders
15. juni 2022 02:00
Despite its major role in complex human functions across the lifespan, most notably navigation, learning and memory, much of the genetic architecture of the hippocampal formation is currently unexplored. Here, through multivariate genome-wide association analysis in volumetric data from 35,411 white British individuals, we reveal 177 unique genetic loci with distributed associations across the hippocampal formation. We identify genetic overlap with eight brain disorders with typical onset at...

No add-on effect of tDCS on fatigue and depression in chronic stroke patients: A randomized sham-controlled trial combining tDCS with computerized cognitive training
6. juni 2022 02:00
CONCLUSION: The results reveal no add-on effect of tDCS on fatigue or depression but support the notion of fatigue as a relevant clinical symptom with possible implications for treatment adherence and response.

COVID-19 lockdown - who cares? The first lockdown from the perspective of relatives of people with severe mental illness
2. juni 2022 02:00
CONCLUSIONS: Many relatives found the first lockdown hard for their family. Efforts to integrate relatives' perspectives in health care and contingency plans under normal circumstances could potentially alleviate some of the extra burden experienced by families during extraordinary circumstances.

Association of Rare APOE Missense Variants V236E and R251G With Risk of Alzheimer Disease
31. mai 2022 02:00
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this genetic association study, a novel variant associated with AD was identified: R251G always coinherited with ε4 on the APOE gene, which mitigates the ε4-associated AD risk. The protective effect of the V236E variant, which is always coinherited with ε3 on the APOE gene, was also confirmed. The location of these variants confirms that the carboxyl-terminal portion of apoE plays an important role in AD pathogenesis. The large risk reductions reported here suggest...

Psychiatric admissions after hospital presented deliberate self-harm in the young: A national study
31. mai 2022 02:00
Follow-up psychiatric care is crucial for young adults presenting to hospitals because of deliberate self-harm (DSH). However, who receives such care is not sufficiently understood. We therefore investigated the clinical and sociodemographic correlates of admissions to psychiatric inpatient treatment immediately following general hospital treatment of DSH in this age band. All episodes of hospital presented DSH among patients aged 18-35 years during the period 2008-2018 were identified from the...
