Abstract:

In 1993, Investing in Health laid out how and why to allocate of scarce financial resources in order to maximise health, forming the foundations of priority setting in health widely used today. This focus on ‘fair allocation of the next dollar’ did not, and still does not, consider the environmental costs of healthcare. This paper outlines the climate footprint of healthcare and outlines the case for integrating a climate criterion into priority setting in health.
