The day has finally arrived for the official opening of the new Centre for Global Sustainability at the University of Oslo. The University Board decided on 18 September 2024 to establish the new centre in which the Sustainable Health Unit (SUSTAINIT), through its employees, is one of the permanent environments associated with the centre. In addition to SUSTAINIT, the three strategic initiatives (UiO: Life Sciences, UiO: Democracy and UiO: Energy) will also be part of the centre. The Centre for Global Sustainability will connect researchers across fields to help build a sustainable and just future.
About the Centre for Global Sustainability
The Centre for Global Sustainability will further strengthen UiO’s sustainability-related research by facilitating greater collaboration across disciplines, through a centre structure that accommodates both permanent and temporary research communities.
From the outset, the centre has a strong team of academic and administrative staff with extensive experience in interdisciplinary research on topics such as global health, consumption, energy and resources, as well as democracy and sustainable development. Over time, we will bring in more researchers and fields to further expand our interdisciplinary profile.
The research at the centre is organised into four interdisciplinary thematic areas:
- Health, climate and environment
- Knowledge, technology and trust
- Democracy, governance and social justice
- Energy, food and resources
The Centre will begin with a Master's programme and two interdisciplinary certificates, in addition to several international education partnerships. Over time, the vision is to introduce additional Bachelor-level programmes in sustainability in collaboration with other faculties at UiO.
