Congratulations to Prof. Eivind Engebretsen for his recent article in The Lancet on ambient scribes, among the most heavily promoted artificial intelligence (AI) tools in health care. Prof. Engebretsen and his co-authors argue that in their current use, these tools pose substantial, often unacknowledged risks that threaten to undermine patient-centred care. Drawing on medical humanities scholarship, they show that current approaches to ambient scribes take a superficial approach to narrative interpretation that omits the clinically relevant aspects of patient experience.
