The institute's overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health.
Research priorities
The Institute has seven prioritized research areas, reflecting international advances in biomedical research.
Research centres
Research groups at the Institute are partners in several centres. On of these, the Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience (CMBN), is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence (SFF).
Research infrastructure
Many research groups at the institute are dependent upon extensive and expensive research infrastructure in form of advanced scientific equipment. The institute has several core facilities within different techonological areas in order to cover this need.
