Gurmil Millie Kaur is a master student at Health Economics, Policy and Management at the University of Oslo. Students at the master programme are offered to do the internship course HMAN4230 in their second or third semester. The course is offered both fall and spring semester.
Gurmil had her internship at The Norwegian Institute of Public Health, working within the field of health technology assessments.
– The internship has made it even more exciting to study and work within this field. I have always had an interest in healthcare, so pursuing a master’s degree and at the same time having the opportunity to do an internship is something I find very exciting.
How are you using what you have learned at UiO in your internship?
– At the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, I work with mini health technology assessments within municipalities. This involves a lot of economic understanding and decision-making related to various measures that municipalities want to implement. I use a lot from my studies in my daily work, especially when it comes to decision-making and following the economic aspects of the work.
I have already completed a bachelor’s degree in Health Management and Health Economics and found the field very interesting. I was particularly interested in the economic evaluation aspect, which is why I chose the HEPMA master’s program, as it also offers specialization in this area.
What have you learned so far during your internship?
– Through my work, I have understood that there is significant collaboration between many different professionals. Many people work together toward the same goal across professions - for example, researchers and doctors often collaborate on the same project. There are also many meetings throughout the day, so there is a lot of interaction and coordination across roles. It has given me a lot of motivation to continue working within this field and opened my eyes to many more opportunities, including possible topics for a master’s thesis and how I can continue to develop within this area.
What would you say to other students who are considering doing an internship?
– I would highly recommend all students to choose to do an internship. It gives you a strong advantage when entering the job market, even if it is only for a limited period. It provides very valuable experience and can help you move forward when you begin your career. It is also very useful to see how everything we do at the university works in the real world, beyond the textbooks. Seeing things in practice gives you a completely different understanding, so I encourage everyone to apply for an internship during their master’s degree.
