Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in examinations and assignments at MED

When you write a text, create code, podcasts, videos or similar as part of your studies at MED, this must be based on independent work.

You are personally responsible for all the content, and there are regulations on cheating, use of sources and citations and data processing that set out what is permitted and what is not.

Text regerated with the aid of AI is based on statistical probabilities. Thus, there is no author, and the same product cannot be reproduced by someone else.

AI tools may be used as aids if they support your learning process. Some courses have their own guidelines for the use of AI in examinations and assignments. If you are in doubt, you must always check with the lecturer/supervisor what is permitted in your course.

Declaration of AI use in assignments

Since AI-generated results cannot be reproduced or verified, you must describe how you have used AI in your assignment. You must explain which tools you have used and what you have used them for in your own work. You must also confirm that, as the author, you take full responsibility for the content, claims and references in the work.

Five recommendations on the use of AI for students at the Faculty of Medicine

1. AI tools may be used as a learning partner and learning support, but not as a substitute for your own work. Remember that these tools neither know your subject nor have access to all relevant scholarly sources. Read UiO’s recommendations here.

2. Before you start using an AI tool, familiarise yourself with how the tool works and how safe it is to use, particularly in terms of what kind of data you may enter.

3. You may use AI tools to find information and literature but always be critical of the sources behind the answers you receive. Verify facts, quotations and references against authoritative sources, for instance using tools such as PubMed and Oria.

4. When you write an assignment, follow the rules for the use of AI tools that apply in your course. Always ask your lecturer if you are unsure what is permitted.

5. The online resource Search & Write provides good information on the use of AI for searching, writing, use of sources and study techniques.
