I am head physician and researcher at Beitostølen Healthsports Center (BHSS) (https://www.bhss.no/ , https://www.bhss.no/forskning/ ), an ideal foundation that provides specialized medical rehabilitation services to children, young adults, and adults through nationwide ongoing performance agreements with the Regional Health Authorities.
BHSS is a world leader in its field, combining the use of adapted physical activity with rehabilitation medicine, educational, and social guidance and follow-up with the goal of achieving the best possible activity and participation throughout life.
I have previously worked for more than 20 years at Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital as a specialist physician, researcher, senior physician, head physician and medical director. In my position at Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital, I was also an associate professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine and taught specialized rehabilitation to 2nd, 4th, and final year medical students.
As a physician, researcher, and leader, I am interested in rehabilitation for persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities and how to have the best possible life despite them. I am interested in both the individual and how the health system can be structured to reduce unwanted variation.
I am also interested in interdisciplinary work and have broad clinical, research, and teaching experience in goal-setting processes and the use of ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health) as a framework for assessing function as well as implementing and evaluating appropriate measures. I have become increasingly interested in issues involving ethical stress, rights, and difficult prioritizations and “values at stake” within the field of habilitation and rehabilitation.
My professional profile is in neurological rehabilitation, habilitation, and movement science. Since 2006, I have combined clinical or management work with research and professional development in spastic paralysis, mobility/movement science, activity and participation for diagnostic groups such as cerebral palsy (CP), follow-up after spinal cord injury and stroke, achondroplasia, and people with functional and participation challenges due to complex causal mechanisms (follow-up study after the July 22 terrorist attack and rehabilitation of patients with substance abuse/mental illness simultaneously with physical and/or cognitive sequelae after illness/injury).
TEACHING AND SUPERVISION
Public Health and Epidemiology and the specialist training program in Clinical Health Psychology for psychologists at the University of Oslo. I also teach master’s students, medical specialist candidates in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other clinical groups in rehabilitation and methodology (research/quality). I am involved in several research projects and supervise Phd- and Master projects, medical residents (LIS) and medical students from UIO who choose BHSS as a practice site for MED6001.
