About the project

Today, high-quality pain management after surgery depends on increased involvement from patients and their family members, and patients are required to take care of their own pain management after discharge to their home. There is further a need for more knowledge about when and how the specialist health care services can educate patients to manage pain after surgery.

Background

Patients discharged from hospital after cardiac surgery needs more education and following up to secure sufficient pain management. Therefore the main objective of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the effect of an educational intervention in patients after discharge from hospital following cardiac surgery.

Objectives

  1. Evaluate the effect of the intervention compared to a group of patients given usual care regarding: pain intensity and pain-related interference with function.
  2. Evaluate the incidence of persistent chronic pain (pain duration ≥ 3 months) after cardiac surgery and related risk factors.
