About the project
The project is a companion to SEVPRI and seeks to investigate whether individuals wish to use other priority setting criteria in addition to QALY-gain when deciding which patients should receive treatment.
SEVQoL comprises a major data collection phase with personal interviews with approximately 600 individuals from the Norwegian general population, followed by a PhD project.
Objectives
The project will examine the support for alternative priority setting criteria, such as age, remaining life expectancy, and temporary loss of quality of life, to determine to what extent these factors are deciding factors when choosing which patients should receive treatment.
The core question for SEVQoL is whether priority setting criteria other than cost-effectiveness find public support.
The project recognises that priority setting in healthcare is complex and could involve multiple criteria. By examining observed support for alternative priority setting criteria, SEVQoL aims to better understand how individuals value different aspects of health and illness and how these values influence treatment decisions.
Goals
The goal is to improve the understanding of the public’s sentiments towards these difficult questions, so that treatment decisions are perceived as transparent and fair by as many people as possible, and so that policy can be worded in terms that can be understood by the public.
Cooperation
SEVQoL is part of a broader effort to promote more effective and equitable priority setting in healthcare. The research group includes experts in health economics, philosophy, and healthcare management, as well as doctoral candidates.
