SUSTAINIT is a knowledge cluster dedicated to mobilizing synergies between research, education and capacity building for health and sustainability — locally and globally. By integrating medical, human, social, natural, and technological sciences, we work toward solutions that support health within a fair and resilient environment. Our unit brings together three centers: the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education (SHE), the Centre for Global Health (CGH), and the Centre for Pandemics and One-Health Research (P1H).

Highlights from 2025

  • We hosted 20 events this year, with high-level participation and strong potential to influence policy and practice.
  • SUSTAINIT continues to coordinate work with The Lancet Commissions. The Lancet One Health Commission  was successfully launched in July 2025 — the report is already receiving excellent attention. We also serve as Secretariat for several ongoing commissions, including Global Governance for Health 2.0, the EASL–Lancet Commission on Liver Disease in Europe, and the NUS–Lancet PRIME Commission on pandemic readiness and evaluation.
  • Our projects continue to bridge education and research across critical topics: antibiotic resistance, climate and health in education, digital twin technologies, translational medical humanities (KNOWIT ), and planetary health (NORPath), among others.
  • We have throughout 2025 continued to offer interdisciplinary education across multiple offers such as our Honours certificates, our Circle U. collaborations as well as our contribution other educational offers at the University of Oslo
  • SUSTAINIT have been very active in applying for external funding and it is a great pleasure to highlight our NRC funded project, HOMESICK, led by Professor Eivind Engebretsen who is joined by Researcher Ida Lillehagen in this very timely project which starts in 2026

In June we celebrated the official opening of the new Centre for Global Sustainability (GLOBE) at UiO, a hub that will bring researchers together across disciplines to advance a sustainable and just future. The University Board’s decision on 18 September 2024 established GLOBE. SUSTAINIT, through our staff, is one of the permanent environments affiliated with the Centre. In 2026 we will continue to engage with GLOBE, further strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, translate evidence into practice, and scale educational innovations that prepare health professionals for sustainable and equitable futures.

We invite you to stay connected — attend our events, read and share our outputs, and collaborate with us both through research and education.  Follow us on LinkedIn and read about the newest vaccine podcast by Professor Gunnveig Grødeland, leader of P1H.

Thank you for being part of the SUSTAINIT community. Wishing you a peaceful holiday season and a healthy, hopeful New Year.
