About INOREG
INOREG stands for INnovations in use Of REGister data for analyzing effects of primary and municipal care in patients with chronic diseases.
In recent years, political initiatives have steadily emerged that will require increased research into how multimorbidity and health services in the municipality affect work participation, disability, quality of life and hospital admissions for chronic patients. Most of this care happens outside hospitals and has been difficult to capture in large, registrer-based studies. Focusing on two important chronic groups, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and musculoskeletal disorders, the INOREG project will meet this need
Background
Increased resource scarcity is expected within municipal health services in the future, due to the increased proportion of elderly people and in the number of patients with chronic diseases. The results from the project will therefore help inform decision makers about how services should be changed to reduce these challenges. In the long term, this can contribute to better coordination and use of health care services as well as reduced inequalities in health.
Objectives and Methodology
Improving the quality of care for chronic patients in the municipalities shall resulting in outcomes such as higher participation in social and working life, fewer hospitalizations, better functional capacity and general quality of life for patients.
The project goals will be achieved using an original approach, combining analyses of patient register data from the municipal health service with qualitative studies of selected patients who have particularly good or poor outcomes. In short, identify combinations of health services that appear to have an effect and those that do not appear to have an effect on the outcomes mentioned above. The health services will include rehabilitation and short-term stays in institutions, GPs, physical therapists, services at home and in nursing homes. We will also identify the characteristics of patients who are particularly prone to poor outcomes. Data will be from Oslo and Trondheim municipalities, as well as Fysioprim at Institute of Health and Society (Helsam).
Sub-projects
The project is divided into separate work packages for COPD and musculoskeletal disorders. Quantitative and qualitative analyzes will be done for both disease groups.
Cooperation
This project is an interdisciplinary collaboration at Helsam. We further cooperate with Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) and NTNU Gjøvik, Norway.
Financing
The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.
