RESiPY Responsibility in Physiotherapy

Duration
01.01.2026–31.12.2030

An essential but understudied subject of modern clinical physiotherapy is the responsibility transferred to patients for conducting large parts of their own treatment. What does patient responsibility imply, and (how) should it be emphasised in priority-setting decisions in physiotherapy?

The main objective of RESiPY is to shed light on the idea of patient responsibility in physiotherapy and investigate how it manifests in clinical practice, with particular emphasis on the perspectives of the patients themselves. Additionally, a subobjective is to contribute theoretically to the broader debates on responsibility practices and priority setting in healthcare and health policy.

RESiPY consists of three work packages:

1) Empirical: document analysis of codes of ethics in physiotherapy, medicine, nursing and social work, focus group interviews with patients and physiotherapists, as well as a survey of a representative sample of Norwegian physiotherapists.

2) Philosophical: explore the complexity and diversity of the concept of responsibility.

3) Priority-setting ethics: develop normative guidance on whether, and to what extent, patient responsibility should be emphasised in priority-setting decisions, in the form of benefit-based and pure responsibility-based considerations.
