Achievements

  • Identification of principles underlying expression and regulation of the water channel aquaporin-4 in the CNS (J Neurosci 17:171-80, 1997; J Neurosci 21:3045-51, 2001; PNAS 98:14108-13, 2001).
  •  Showing that removal of perivascular aquaporin-4 protects against development of postischemic and hyponatremic edema and delays K+ clearance from the extracellular space (PNAS 100:2106-11, 2003; PNAS, 100:13615-20, 2003, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 4:991-1001, 2003, FASEBJ 2004).
  • Identification of neuronal plasma membrane microdomains that colocalize beta-amyloid and presenilin (Neuroscience, 120:291-300, 2003) and the spatial relationship between the amyloid depositions and the dendrosomatic plasma membranes (J Alzheimers Dis. 2009;16(2):315-23).
  • Demonstrating a transient loss of perivascular aquaporin-4 after ischemia (PNAS 103: 13532 – 6, 2006). Showing evidence for expression of AQP9, an aquaglyceroporin in mitochondria of the dopaminergic neurons of midbrain (FASEB J 19, 1459-1467, 2005; J. Neuroscience Res, 87:1310-1322, 2009).
  • Identification of an AQP4/TRPV4 complex involved in calcium response and volume regulation in the astrocytes (Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2011 Feb 8;108(6):2563-8).
