Challenges

The long term goals are to contribute to knowledge needed to design and implement interventions and policies to promote nutrition related health and prevent disease.

The challenge is to identify the reasons why people adopt and maintain healthy/unhealthy eating habits and to develop good strategies, at different levels in society, to promote healthy eating.

Drawing on epidemiology and theories from social sciences, we approach these challenges using a combination of methodology:

  • Data from large surveys (cross-sectional and longitudinal) are used to get a broad picture of disparities in dietary behaviours and understanding of which factors are associated with these at different ages.
  • Qualitative methodology is used to acquire an in-depth understanding of factors affecting dietary behaviours.
  • Intervention studies are used to develop effective strategies to motivate people, and to make it easier for them, to adopt healthy eating habits.

Furthermore, we would like to continue and expand our role as a key European partner within EU funded research consortia investigating adolescent nutrition and health.
