OBCT Obesity: Biological, socioCultural, and environmental risk Trajectories

Duration
01.11.2023–31.10.2028

The steady rise in overweight and obesity in Europe disproportionally affects people and communities of a lower socioeconomic position (SEP). Many obesity prevention approaches exist, but these have had limited effect thus far in populations that need it the most: low-SEP subgroups. In this context, there is a need for implementation of effective individual-level and population-based strategies that prevent obesity and reduce health inequalities

About

The OBCT project will provide health professionals, researchers, policymakers and the public with knowledge, maps and tools to support sustainable prevention of obesity, with a particular focus on reducing risk in low-SEP communities.

To achieve this, we will quantify the contribution of biological, sociocultural, and built environment risk factors of obesity and their interactions in and across various life course stages and translate the resulting knowledge into practical and effective tools for action.

For more information about the overall project, please visit the project main website and sign up for the newsletter.

The Public health Nutrition group leads OBCT WP4 "Making policies work" with a particular responsibility for Objective 3 below.

OBCT WP4 Objectives

  1. To assess obesity reducing policies for equitability
  2. To expand the STOP microsimulation model (Health-GPS) for national policy evaluations and economic forecasting
  3. To co-develop and pilot tools to build community capacity for adapting and implementing obesity-reducing policies in accordance with local needs
