Academic interests and areas of expertise

My doctoral thesis focus on people who cannot express themselves. The people I work with are exposed to pain and stress they cannot tell anyone about. The technology we develop can help young children, people with severe mental illness, autism, cerebral palsy or developmental disabilities, the elderly with severe dementia and people with acquired brain injuries. In the current project, we test heart rate and other biomarkers as a means of communication. The doctoral project will contribute to better follow-up for those who cannot communicate how they are feeling.

Professional interests include:

- Heart rate measures, electrodermal activity and breathing rate for real-time communication of sympathetic activation

- Long-term biomarkers such as inflammatory cytokines (including MCP-1, IL-1RA, IL-8, TGFβ1, IL-17 and IL-18) and HRV for chronic and acute pain: use in clinical practice to improve treatment

- Genetic research, genetic abnormalities and rare diagnoses

- Medical technology for precision medicine: individual and patient-specific treatment

- Pediatric brain cancer: late effects such as cognitive difficulties and mental illness (focus of master thesis, department of psychology)

- Investigation and treatment for comorbid difficulties in autism spectrum disorder

- Substance abuse, testosterone and ADHD: which factors contribute to the use of anabolic steroids and how can these be understood

Professional background
