I am Professor of Paediatrics, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo and Head of Research, Dept. of Research and Development, Clinic of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Akershus University Hospital. I am educated Medical Doctor (1998), specializing in general paediatrics and paediactric cardiology, and obtained a PhD degree (2007) on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME) in adolescents.
My primary research fields are CFS/ME and post-infective fatigue syndrome (PIFS), and I am responsible for studies of underlying disease mechanisms as well as diagnostics and therapeutics. Since 2019, I have chaired the international COFFI-consortium (Collaborative on Fatigue Following Infection). During recent years, a predominant interest has been the post-COVID-19 condition, and I have established three comprehensive research projects within this field.
In addition, I am principal investigator of cardiology research projects, partly in children (focusing on spontaneously discovered cardiac murmurs), and partly among adult heart transplant recipients (focusing on autonomic cardiovascular control). Also, as Head of Research, I am involved on other projects affiliated with the department, in particular clinical trials of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions in children.
I teach paediatrics in the undergraduate medical curriculum (Module 6), and I have been the principal supervisor of a total of seven successfully graduated PhD candidates. I am the sole author of a comprehensive medical textbook (‘FRISK og SYK’, literally ‘HEALTH and DISEASE’), which has been extensively used in undergraduate nursing education for more than two decades and also exploited by students of other health care professions. I am engaged in dissemination activities, and I am a regular contributor to public debates.
As Head of Research, I am part of the management group at the Clinic of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, with formal responsibility for the research group PAEDIA and the Dept. of Research and Development. PAEDIA consists of seven postdoctoral fellows/senior researchers, 12 PhD fellows, and four technical/administrative employees, in addition to affiliated students and clinicians.
As clinical consultant, I have primarily worked with children suffering from congenital heart disorders.
