  A key question when it comes to contemporary and future practices of punishment, is how these are influenced by the continuous rise of digital technologies, and in turn, how this might affect the purpose, as well as the function of punishment. This chapter addresses digitalization of punishment in connection with three themes: first, surveillance and control, where we will zoom in on the use of electronic monitoring, which has been employed in many jurisdictions. Secondly, we will look at prisons in digitized societies, focusing on video visits, digital surveillance in prisons, internet access, and the recent introduction of smart prisons. Thirdly, we will discuss the development and possible future of punishment in light of the continuous development of digital societies.

  Much scholarship has been devoted to the question of whether therapeutic interventions in prisons constitute a more humane, supportive counterweight to more punitive aspects of punishment. An alternative view is that they represent an invasive, controlling and punitive force in their own right. This article explores how drug recovery units in Norwegian prisons are perceived as being safer, more therapeutically beneficial and more privileged environments than other prison units, yet simultaneously more challenging, punitive, and at times, more painful places to be. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and 55 interviews (33 prisoners and 22 staff members), the article uses the concepts of penal tightness, depth and weight to analyse how these units’ hybrid nature, as simultaneously treatment and punishment, contributes to a uniquely ‘tight’ form of imprisonment.

  Therapeutic interventions have been implemented in many prison systems around the world, in an attempt to address high rates of harmful substance use amongst people in prison. This article analyses the criteria for acceptance to drug recovery units in Norwegian prisons, based on an ethnographic study of four high-security prisons and 22 interviews with prison staff. The main criteria that were considered by staff during the assessment of potential candidates, were the timing and type of sentence applicants held; the type of offence applicants were convicted for; the types of medications they used and their perceived motivations for entering treatment.

  Background Sex, relationships, and substance use often go hand in hand. Despite this, the impact of sex and relationships on recovery are often overlooked in the field of substance use disorder treatment (SUDT). This study aims to explore sex, relationships, and relapse risk for people in recovery and as an overlooked area of importance in SUDT. Method This qualitative study uses semi-structured interviews with people currently and/or formerly in prison, together with ethnographic field data from four high security prisons in Norway, collected between July 2021–April 2022. Results Common sources of anguish around sex after release and recovery included both forming new and maintaining long-term relationships with partners at a different stage in their recovery, dating and initiating sexual relationships with new partners, concerns about sexual performance and fears around attaining sexual pleasure without chemical enhancements. Conclusion The implications that sex, dating and intimate relationships may have for individual relapse to substance use, can and should play a greater role in both SUD treatment and preparation for release from prison. These problems are exacerbated in carceral settings and should be considered when planning re-entry to the community and in the development of individual relapse prevention strategies.

  Our aim in this conceptual article is to theoretically reimagine the concept of ‘healthy prisons’ in a way that more thoroughly grounds it in the everyday experiences of prisoners. Our point of departure is the observation that there seems to be an intriguing conceptual and theoretical overlap between first-person oriented empirical studies of two spheres of human experience that are normally seen as separate: serious illness and imprisonment. Our analysis leads us to reimagine the term ‘healthy prisons’ in a way that increases its usefulness for anyone interested in making prisons healthier and more constructive and reinventive institutions.

  Kan fengsler være helsefremmende? Spørsmålet kan virke overraskende – kanskje også provoserende. Fengsler forbindes ofte med belastning, isolasjon og skade. Forskning viser klare sammenhenger mellom fengsling og psykiske helseutfordringer, selvskading og selvmord. Fengselslivet innebærer ofte inaktivitet, rusproblemer og forsterkede traumer. Fengselet setter mennesker i en sårbar situasjon – fysisk, psykisk og sosialt. Med dette som bakteppe kan tanken om et helsefremmende fengsel virke fjern. Likevel er det her denne boken begynner. Den undersøker hvordan fengselslivet også kan romme muligheter for mestring, og hvorfor det er viktig å studere helsefremmende praksiser – selv når de fremstår som unntak. Boken tar utgangspunkt i innsattes egne erfaringer. Den belyser helse og uhelse bak murene, kriminalomsorgens utvikling og helsetjenestene i fengsel. Gjennom temaer som kropp og rom, identitet, relasjoner, tid, mening og håp viser forfatterne hva et bedre fengsel kan innebære. Avslutningsvis reiser forfatterne spørsmål om ambisjonsnivået i kriminalomsorgen. Norske fengsler omtales ofte som velfungerende, med få rømninger og relativt lav tilbakefall til kriminalitet. Men er det godt nok? Eller bør vi stille høyere krav til hva fengselsinstitusjonen skal være – og til hvordan et helsefremmende fengsel kan se ut i praksis?

  In this special edition episode of Psych Up, our Managing Director Oliver speaks to Doctoral Research Fellow, Rose Boyle. Rose is completing her PhD in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Oslo, where they discuss her research focusing on substance abuse disorder treatment in the Norwegian prison system. During her research Rose has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in high-security prisons interviewing both people in prison, and prison healthcare staff. Rose provides insight into how she looked after herself during this time, the stigma surrounding substance abuse and highlights the changes that should be made to improve the prison management system.

  Brukerromsordningen tilbyr hygieniske og trygge rammer for inntak av illegale rusmidler. Formålet med ordningen er å redusere skader knyttet til rusbruk, samt redusere faren for overdose og smittespredning. Det første brukerrommet i Norge ble åpnet i 2005 i Oslo. I årene som har gått, har det skjedd betydelige fremskritt på feltet, blant annet gjennom lovendringer og en utvidelse av tilbudet til å inkludere andre rusmidler enn heroin og andre inntaksformer enn injisering. I dag finnes det brukerrom både i Oslo og Bergen. Tidligere evalueringer, utført av Statens institutt for rusmiddelforskning (SIRUS) i 2007 og 2009, belyste utfordringene ved oppstarten av brukerromsordningen og ga flere anbefalinger. Denne evalueringen er utført etter oppdrag fra Helsedirektoratet og har som mål å bidra med økt og oppdatert kunnskap på feltet. Dette gjøres gjennom å analysere sentrale utviklingsområder og ved å inkludere perspektivene til både ansatte og brukere. Evalueringen har tatt i bruk et blandet metodedesign («mixed methods»). Metodologien inkluderer kvantitativ data om drift, trender og erfaringer i brukerrommene, samlet inn via spørreskjemaer besvart av ledelse og ansatte. I tillegg ble det gjennomført dybdeintervjuer med registrerte brukere ved Prindsen mottakssenter i Oslo. Sistnevnte gir et kvalitativt innblikk i brukernes perspektiver og erfaringer.

  Drug use and the hybrid penal landscape People that use drugs are overrepresented in the criminal justice system, and the influence of drugs and drug control shapes prison life. Prisons are thus increasingly tasked with assisting those in their custody to desist from drug use and crime, and to facilitate their reintegration into society. This results in a carceral landscape which draws upon medical, legal and sociological understandings of drug use, and which ultimately views drug use as both an illness and as an illegal activity. From this starting point, the thesis examines drug recovery units in the Norwegian prison system as a mode of hybrid therapeutic intervention for drug use, analysing both their function and the mechanisms at work within them. In doing so, the thesis draws on the perspectives of both people in prison and those employed within the correctional services, based on ethnography and interview data from four high-security prisons and one low-security prison. The pains of change Desistance from crime and recovery from drug use are often extraordinarily painful processes in themselves. These challenges add to the difficulties experienced in drug treatment and in prisons more broadly. The thesis explores how prisoners navigate the regimented environment of therapeutic interventions, and manage their own trajectories towards desistance and recovery. Furthermore, it suggests that there are significant aspects of prisoners’ lived realities that often go overlooked and which should be integrated into existing therapeutic interventions. Recovery and desistance as an individual and social process Prison staff play a vital role in shaping prisoners’ trajectories towards treatment, recovery, desistance and release. They operate within a system where the potential need for such initiatives is immense, yet where possibilities for intervention are increasingly limited by economic strain and understaffing. The thesis demonstrates the range of factors that influence and limit prisoners’ access to drug recovery units and ongoing treatment. While it critiques numerous aspects of existing interventions, it also highlights the potential to find supportive and caring practices. Such approaches may allow for therapeutic intervention and positive transformation to take place, even in penal systems that are overburdened and underresourced.
