PriSUD - Diagnosing and treating substance use disorders among people serving time in prison or in the community

The PriSUD project aims to help improve quality of life and treatment outcomes among people with substance use disorders serving time in prison or in the community.

About the project

The PriSUD project aims to help improve quality of life and treatment outcomes among people with substance use disorders serving time in prison or in the community. Successful research in this field will have important implications for ongoing policy related to interventions for mental health and substance use disorders in the population.

Background

A large proportion of people serving time in prison or in the community experience substance use disorders (SUDs), which are associated with poor physical and mental health, social marginalization, and economic disadvantage. Despite the global situation characterized by the incarceration of large numbers of people with SUD and the health problems associated with SUD, people serving time in prison or in the community are underrepresented in public health research.

Objectives

The overall objective of the PriSUD project is to develop new knowledge that will contribute to better mental and physical health, improved quality of life, and better life expectancies among people with SUD serving time in prison or in the community. The project focuses on three different time periods related to imprisonment: before imprisonment, during imprisonment and post-release.

Methods

PriSUD is based on a multidisciplinary mixed methods approach, including the methodological perspectives of both quantitative and qualitative methods.

PriSUD is based on two national cohorts: The Norwegian Prison Release Study (nPRIS) and The Norwegian Offender Mental Health and Addiction Study (NorMA). The NorMA cohort is based on survey data including 1,495 individuals in Norwegian prisons. Data were collected in a total of 57 prison units in the period 2013-2014, including low- and high-security prisons. The nPRIS cohort is based on data from the Norwegian Prison registry and includes all people serving time in prison or in the community in Norway. The cohort has been updated several times (in 2015, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024), and has been linked to various national registries.

The qualitative part, Treatment for substance use disorders in prison,  includes ethnographic fieldwork and semistructured interviews.

We collaborate with WayBack, a non-profit foundation for people with lived experience, focusing on the return to society after release.
