About the group
Our research stems from patient care at the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Observation Unit, as well as the Norwegian National Unit of CBRNE Medicine (The CBRNE center).
Research areas
We have four areas of focus for our research:
- Sepsis
- Acute poisonings and toxic alcohols
- Clinical suicide research
- Emergency medical treatment
Longterm goals
We treat patients who are acutely ill and for whom proper treatment is urgent. Based on this, we have set long-term goals within our focus areas.
Sepsis
For sepsis treatment, the goal is more personalized treatment to increase survival rates and reduce complications among a large patient group.
Toxic alcohols and poisonings
Regarding toxic alcohols, improved diagnostics will enhance survival, and our group is in the final phase of testing simple technology that will determine the presence of formic acid or glycolic acid.
For other poisonings, we will continue our targeted efforts to keep track of poisoning cases in Norway, including survival rates, available treatments, and long-term prognosis.
Clinical suicide research
In suicide research, the focus is on care and improved intensive treatment in the first phase after a suicide attempt, as well as research on children as relatives and attitudes among staff towards this patient group.
Emergency medical treatment
For acute medical treatment methods, we will focus on treatment algorithms, improving guidelines, and enhanced diagnostics for various conditions such as SIRS, rhabdomyolysis, acute strokes, and cardiac arrest survivors.
Collaboration
We welcome collaboration with other research environments at UiO and can offer a clinical setting where research and patient inclusion are part of everyday life.
We are also part of the Unit for Internal Medicine Research Laboratory, together with the Department of Cardiology and the Department of Nephrology, OUS.

The group collaborates with a number of units both nationally and internationally.
