Summary
This thesis evaluates the use of Acoustic Emission (AE) technology to prevent screw stripping during orthopedic surgeries, particularly in osteoporotic bone.
The thesis describes the innovative process from the feasibility of detecting AE during screw stripping in synthetic bone, then cadaver bone that was verified, and finally testing a modified screwdriver on orthopedic surgeons.
The AE modified screwdriver can detect ultrasonic signals during screw insertion, providing real-time feedback to surgeons. The studies demonstrated that AE technology can accurately predict and prevent screw stripping, significantly reducing the rate of stripped screws.
By offering surgeons an additional tool to guide screw insertion, AE technology can potentially enhance surgical outcomes, particularly in patients with poor bone quality, leading to more stable fracture fixations and improved patient recovery.
