This study investigated abortion providers’ experiences during Norway’s recent regulatory transition extending the time allowed for self-determined abortion from 12 to 18 weeks. Through semi-structured interviews with 12 healthcare professionals, we captured abortion care providers’ views on their work and expectations about the regulatory shift. Despite finding abortion care meaningful and supporting patients’ autonomy, providers expressed significant anxiety about the reform, revealing a paradox in which supportive providers feared the effects of a liberalising policy. This anxiety stemmed from practical concerns about capacity associated with challenges in managing pain, complications, and emotional intensity in terminations after 12 weeks rather than moral objections. Healthcare workers felt responsible for adapting to new regulations without being informed about the practical implications for their work. Our findings suggest that gestational age may shape providers’ emotional and possibly moral experience of abortion work in ways that are difficult to articulate within progressive contexts. This study demonstrates that expanding abortion access requires more than legislative change. Attention to abortion care providers’ working conditions and expectations is crucial for translating progressive policies into good abortion care.

This chapter explores how academic textual production may be understood as a practice of responsible agency, through a dialogue between two scholarly texts about microbes. The first emphasizes the discovery of bacteria, suggesting an asymmetry between humans and nature. The second emphasizes the production of bacterial resistance to drugs, inscribing a symmetric interdependence between humans and nature. By exploring these two texts, the chapter outlines two contrasting ways in which microbes and authors are inscribed as actors in the texts. Ironically, these explorations also work to multiply, complement, attenuate, and fuse inscribed agency, outlining modalities of response through the practice of crafting texts as artefacts. The chapter argues that agency, both as textual device and as responses inscribed through reinterpretation, must be treated as a kind of chimerism, which, as a consequence, means that agency is emergent, and that the ability to respond through the demands elicited by scientific text production has the prime responsibility for translating worlds to words.

This paper reviews the literature on health and female homosexuality in Brazil and, along the way, outlines an alternative approach to reviewing academic literature. Rather than summarising the contents of previously published papers, we relate to these publications primarily as partakers in the creation of knowledge. Inspired by Actor-Network Theory (ANT), we apply ethnographic methods to understand the papers as study participants endowed with action. We also draw on the notions of inscription and intertextuality to trace the complex relationship between the findings in the articles and the realities outside of them. We claim that ‘evidence’ is the product of translational processes in which original events, such as experiments, blood tests and interviews, are changed into textual entities. In addition, text production is seen as an absorption of everything else surrounding its creation. When events are turned into articles, the text incorporates the political environment to which original events once belonged. We thus observe a political text inscribed into the written evidence of sexually transmitted infections, and the practice of publishing about scientific vulnerabilities emerges as political action. In contrast with traditional ways of reviewing literature in medical scholarship, this article offers a reminder that although there is a connection between textual evidence and the reality outside publications, these dimensions are not neutrally interchangeable.

Abortrettigheter under angrep: Demokrati uten retten til å bestemme over egen kropp?
