Career Opportunities for Graduate Doctors

After you have completed your studies, you can work either clinically or administratively. You can also specialize in many directions, something that requires continuing education – which usually takes five years. Medical studies qualify candidates for research education leading to a doctorate (PhD).

As a graduate doctor you can work clinically, for example as a general practitioner, private specialist, at a hospital or in the municipal health services. If you are particularly interested in research – perhaps you have also have taken the research option – there are opportunities for a future career in research. There are relevant administrative jobs at e.g. the Directorate of Health and Social Affairs, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision or the health services in general. Many people also decide to leave the country and work as a doctor abroad.

Internships

The Norwegian Registration Authority for Health Personnel can answer questions regarding signing up for internships, documentation requirements and sign-up forms.

Research career

The PhD programme and the research option in medicine are the two formalized research degrees at the Faculty of Medicine. There is more information about doctorates and research careers.
