Frederik Emil Juul is a Ph.d research fellow at the Clinical Effectiveness research group. His main project is the clinical trial COLONIZE, which investigate whether fecal microbiota transplantation can be used as a treatment for primary infections with the bacterium Clostridioides difficile.

Academic interests

  • Microbiota therapy
  • Clostridioides difficile
  • Antibiotic use and -resistance
  • Epidemiology
  • eHealth

I have both a medical degree and research experience from the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital. During my medical study I did the complementary Medical Student Research Program and did research in colorectal cancer gene expression. This made me familiar with basal, experimental research, including cell culture, gene expression analysis and statistics.

I was chief editor of Æsculap for two years and was part of the board of Frampeik 2013 - The Medical student’s research conference in Norway - with nearly one hundred participants. I also started writing short essays to a "Doctor´s life" in The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association during my medical studies.

My clinical experience is mainly from Hamar and Sanderud hospitals in Norway. As an intern at Hamar hospital I worked at both the medical and surgery wards at the hospital, which includes departments in gastroenterology and gastric surgery. The final part of my Norwegian internship was at Skjåk medical centre in the small, rural mountain village of Bismo.

I started as a Ph.d. research fellow in the Clinical Effectiveness Research group in September 2017. My main projects are the COLONIZE trials where we investigate if intestinal microbiota can be used as treatment in primary Clostridioides difficile infections. This novel treatment strategy can potentially alleviate the use of conventional antibiotics in a time with increasing antibiotic resistance. I am also involved in the Clinical Effectiveness Research group’s projects in cancer epidemiology and eHealth.
