Challenges

The principal challenge in this line of research is the identification of the molecular factors that specify the different types of neurons that make up a functional circuit, and the organizing principles whereby these factors interact with ongoing circuit activity to coordinate the outgrowth of axons and the selection of appropriate synaptic targets.

To this end we are engaged in molecular mining strategies to find key molecules and we are using advanced optical recording and stimulation techniques to follow and perturb dynamic activity in defined circuits.

We are also using knowledge about differentiation programs to promote the generation of identified neuron types from stem cells so that these can be used to regenerate circuits following damage or disease.
