  Recovery in co-occurring substance use and mental health problems is a personal and social process that involves quality of life and community inclusion. Recovery-oriented practices consequently need to address both personal and social issues, and collaborative approaches can be useful in developing recovery-oriented practices to promote recovery and citizenship. The aim of the present study was to examine the potential benefits of using a collaborative approach to recovery-oriented practice development for self-reported recovery and citizenship among residents at a supported housing site. Residents, staff, and researchers collaborated to develop principles for a recovery-oriented practice, which were then to be integrated into practice. A prospective comparative design was applied with residents at a supported housing site with an ongoing collaborative recovery-oriented practice development initiative (n = 7), and a reference group of residents at supported housing sites following practice as usual (n = 21). There was a significant increase in the recovery domain of willingness to ask for help after the recovery-oriented practice development among residents at the project site. The reported levels of the citizenship domains civil and legal rights and staff support among residents at the project site demonstrated stability, whereas the levels of these domains decreased among residents at the reference sites. The results suggest that facilitating collaborative approaches to developing recovery-oriented practices can help promote recovery and protect citizenship for residents in supported housing. The study had several methodological limitations; thus, further research on the promotion of recovery and citizenship in supported housing is needed.

  Abstract Citizenship is considered intertwined with recovery, and may be a useful perspective for advancing quality of life among marginalised groups. Yet, matters of citizenship among persons with co-occurring substance use and mental health problems both in research and practice. Aims: In order to measure citizenship among persons with co-occurring problems in a Norwegian study, a measure of citizenship was translated from English to Norwegian. The aims of the study were to 1) translate and adapt the Citizenship Measure, developed by Rowe and colleagues at the Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health, to Norwegian, and 2) to assess the internal consistency and convergent validity of the Norwegian translated measure. Methods: The translation process was carried out using forward and back translation procedures. To examine measurement properties, a convenience sample of 104 residents with co-occurring problems living in supported housing completed the measure. Results: Two factors were identified, related to rights, and to relational citizenship. The Norwegian translation of the Citizenship Measure showed high internal consistency and adequate convergent validity. Conclusions: We argue that the measure can be useful in assessing perceived citizenship, and in initiating efforts to support citizenship among persons with co-occurring problems.

  Recovery, a prominent concern in mental health care worldwide, has been variously defined, requiring further clarification of the term as processual. Few studies have comprehensively addressed the nature of recovery processes. This study aims to explore the nature and characteristics of experiences of recovery as processual. The method used is a form of qualitative meta-synthesis that integrates the findings from 28 qualitative studies published during the past 15 years by one research group. Three meta-themes were developed: (a) recovery processes as step-wise, cyclical, and continuous, (b) recovery as everyday experiences, and (c) recovery as relational. These themes describe how recovery is intertwined with the way life in general unfolds in terms of human relationships, learning, coping, and ordinary everyday living. This meta-synthesis consolidates an understanding of recovery as fundamental processes of living in terms of being, doing, and accessing. These processes are contextualized in relation to mental health and/or substance abuse problems and highlight the need for support to facilitate the person’s access to necessary personal, social, and material resources to live an ordinary life in recovery.

  Purpose Engagement in meaningful occupations and being included as full citizens of the community, is essential in everyday life, and may be of considerable relevance for recovery and quality of life. However, persons with co-occurring substance use and mental health problems experience extensive obstacles to engagement in occupations and citizenship. The relationship between objective measures of occupational status and subjective experiences of occupational meaningfulness, citizenship and recovery, is scarcely researched in the context of co-occurring problems. As such, the purpose of this study is to examine associations between occupational status, occupational meaningfulness, citizenship and recovery and quality of life and to examine the roles of occupational meaningfulness and citizenship as possible mediators between occupational status and recovery and quality of life. Design/methodology/approach The study used a cross-sectional design with a sample of 104 residents at supported housing sites across six Norwegian cities. Findings Linear regression analyzes indicated that occupational status was significantly associated with the citizenship domains caring for others and community participation and with the quality of life measure positive affect. Occupational meaningfulness and citizenship were significantly associated with different domains of recovery and quality of life. Furthermore, mediation analyzes showed that the relationship between occupational status and recovery and quality of life was mediated by caring for others and community participation. Originality/value The results suggest that emphasizing opportunities for occupational meaningfulness and citizenship in practice may have positive implications for recovery among persons with co-occurring problems.

  Recovery for residents who experience co-occurring problems and live in supported housing takes place in everyday contexts. This study aims to explore residents’ self-reported recovery and quality of life and examine the relationships between these factors and issues in supported housing. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted at 21 supported housing sites in six cities across Norway. A total of 104 residents (76 men and 28 women) responded to measures of recovery (Recovery Assessment Scale – Revised), life satisfaction (Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life), affect (single items), staff support (Brief INSPIRE) and sense of home (single items). Findings Linear regression analyses indicated associations between recovery and staff support (B = 0.01, 95% CI = 0.01-0.02, ß = 0.39), housing satisfaction (B = 0.15, 95% CI = 0.07-0.22, ß = 0.38), sense of home (B = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.14-0.32, ß = 0.49) and satisfaction with personal economy (B = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.05-0.17, ß = 0.33). Similarly, associations were found between life satisfaction and staff support (B = 0.03, 95% CI = 0.02-0.04, ß = 0.46), housing satisfaction (B = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.46-0.80, ß = 0.60), sense of home (B = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.42-0.87, ß = 0.51) and satisfaction with personal economy (B = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.19-0.50, ß = 0.39). Originality/value The findings imply that core issues in supported housing, namely, staff support, housing satisfaction, sense of home and satisfaction with personal economy, are associated with recovery and quality of life

  SERAF utarbeider en årlig nasjonal statusrapport for legemiddelassistert rehabilitering (LAR) på oppdrag fra Helsedirektoratet. Statusrapportenen er basert på en kartlegging som alle LAR-tiltakene gjennomfører en gang i året. Formålet er å kartlegge pasientenes situasjon, behandling, og behandlingsutfall i LAR. Denne spørreundersøkelsen har blitt gjennomført gjennom de siste 23 årene, og har vist at LAR over tid har utviklet seg til å være en godt etablert, standardisert behandling for de fleste med opioiddominert avhengighet. I statusrapporten oppsummeres sentrale funn om situasjonen til pasienter i LAR, aktuell behandlingsstatus, medikamentell behandling (inkludert valg av medikament og dosering), psykososial oppfølging (som behandlingsmål, individuell plan, ansvarsgruppemøter og behandling for psykiske helseproblemer), psykiske helseproblemer og rusbruk siste fire uker, og rusbruk og helserelaterte forhold siste år, og tilfredshet med behandlingen. I tillegg presenteres funn om dødsfall blant pasienter i LAR siste år. Ivar Skeie har analysert mortalitetsdata og har fulgt LAR-tiltakene tett for å kunne inkludere komplette tall på overdoser, suicid og naturlige dødsfall. Årets statusrapport bygger på svar fra 18 ulike LAR-tiltak fordelt på fem regioner. Innføringen av det elektroniske journalsystemet Helseplattformen ved St. Olavs hospital og i Nord-Trøndelag har medført utfordringer som har gjort at disse LAR-tiltakene ikke har hatt mulighet til å gjennomføre statusundersøkelsen. Dette innebærer at tallene som presenteres for region Midt ikke kan sammenlignes med fjorårets tall for samme region, og at nasjonale gjennomsnitt ikke inkluderer St. Olavs hospital og Nord-Trøndelag. I 2022 ble det innført nye LAR-retningslinjer, og dette er den første statusrapporten som er gjennomført etter dette. I tillegg inneholder årets statusrapport flere nye elementer. LAR-tiltak som benytter det elektroniske journalsystemet DIPS Arena har besvart en noe videreutviklet versjon av statusundersøkelsen som inkluderer nye tilleggsopplysninger. Tiltakene det gjelder er Oslo, Bergen, Fonna og Førde. De nye spørsmålene omhandler blant annet opplevde bivirkninger av LAR-medikament, og ulike spørsmål om fysisk helse, sykdommer og behandling siste år. Spørsmålene er besvart av omtrent 1 av 4 pasienter i LAR, og bidrar til å videreutvikle kunnskap om behandlingen og om pasientenes situasjon. Samtidig er det første gang pasienter som er i heroinassistert behandling (HAB) deltar i statsundersøkelsen. I et av kapitlene oppsummeres hovedfunn for pasienter i HAB. Vi ser at økningen av gjennomsnittsalderen i LAR fortsetter også i år. Vi minner om at en aldrende LAR-populasjon er å anse som en suksess i seg selv. LAR har medført at mange personer med opioidavhengighet kan eldes med sykdommen. Samtidig ønsker vi i fremtiden å styrke forutsetninger for gode levevaner, tilgjengelig utredning og behandling for psykiske lidelser, utredning og behandling for somatiske sykdommer som hepatitt C, og regelmessige legeundersøkelser. Det er viktig at LAR fortsetter å være en behandlingsmodell som oppleves tilgjengelig, til å leve godt med over tid, med høy faglig kvalitet og forsvarlighet. Samtidig er det viktig å støtte majoriteten av pasientene i å ha en rimelig god rusmestring. Denne balansegangen utgjør hverdagen til pasienter og behandlere i LAR. Denne rapporten er resultatet av betydelig innsats i hvert LAR-tiltak. Vi takker for innsatsen fra pasienter i LAR som har besvart statusundersøkelsen, LAR-ansatte over hele landet for arbeidet med innsamling av svar, og for et godt samarbeid med LAR-tiltakene og med Helsedirektoratet.
