Orthopaedic Research Group, Ahus

The group researches in all aspects of Orthopedic Surgery, from basic science and biomechanics to developing new techniques and clinical studies.

During the last five years, the group has conducted five randomized controlled trials (RCT) on hip, wrist, and clavicular fractures and a multicenter RCT on Achilles ruptures involving over 600 patients which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

About the Group

We are passionate about doing research in close relationship to the clinic, from which results can be transformed into improved treatment for our patients.

The orthopaedic research group constitute an engaged group of clinical researchers who are involved in more than 40 ongoing research projects that focuses on frequently seen injuries and illnesses among the patients normally treated at the Orthopaedic clinic.

Aims

The research projects are mainly aimed at the fundamental mechanisms of tendon- and bone healing, with a primary focus of the ankle, knee, wrist and neck of femur which together compile the vast majority of orthopaedic patients in need of acute treatment.

All areas of orthopaedics are represented: shoulder, spine, hip, knee, fractures, children, foot and hand.

Thirteen of the ongoing studies are randomized clinical studies (RCTs). Further studies have focused on developing preventive measures to reduce the risk of postoperative infections.

Researchers from the Orthopaedic Research Group run the Norwegian Cartilage Project, which is a national multicenter study within cartilage injuries of the knee.

Long-term goals

Operative sportsmedicine, “The elderly patient” and clinical effect research are our three main areas of commitment.

Our goals include that all groups of patients will have the opportunity to participate in a research project and that we are sustaining our research in close relationship to the clinical service provided.
