An important part of the mandate is to assist academic communities in the development, operation and evaluation of digital learning resources. The section also manages the faculty’s funding and resources related to educational development, in line with the faculty’s adopted strategy.
Support for development projects for use in teaching
The Section for Health Sciences Education (HELP) contributes to strengthening pedagogical competence at the faculty, supports the faculty’s quality assurance work, and supports academic communities in developing study programmes, teaching methods and assessment methods.
HELP’s projects
Atlas – individual feedback
Individual feedback is important for improving student learning, but it is demanding to provide. Atlas is a tool that uses GPT to analyse exam answers, highlight knowledge gaps, and suggest further work for each individual student. The tool has been developed in collaboration with students and academic staff at MED. Please get in touch if you are interested in exploring how this can strengthen the learning outcomes for your students.
Virmik – digital microscopy
Extensive practice is required to develop the ability to recognize microscopic structures, however limitations on accessing slides and microscopes can make this challenging. Virmik is a virtual microscope where students can explore and practice on high-quality digital slides. Please get in touch if you are interested in how this can be used in your teaching.
Team-based learning with digital tools
The teaching method team-based learning (TBL) promotes students’ ability to collaborate, solve problems, and communicate through active learning. TBL with digital tools is a version of the method where instructors are given digital resources that make TBL easier to carry out, follow up, and implement in larger student groups. Please get in touch if you are interested in how this can be used in your teaching.
Adapt – simulation-based deliberate practice
Simulation-based skills training is important for providing students an extensive practice in assessing and treating patients. Adapt is a technical solution where students can rehearse clinical assessments and decisionmaking through case vignettes. Please get in touch if you are curious about how this can work in your teaching.
Developing case vignettes with AI
Systematic and efficient learning with well-designed case vignettes gives students the clinical and professional understanding they need for meeting patients in practice. In collaboration with academic environments, AI is used to create case vignettes and multiple-choice questions. The case vignettes can be reused and shared across subjects and courses, and the multiple-choice questions are used to test students’ understanding. Please get in touch if you would like to develop case vignettes for your students to practice on.
Exam quiz
Students have long asked for access to published exam questions in a digital MCQ format. In a collaboration between HELP and Studieseksjonen, a question bank is now being developed to generate quizzes that students can use preparing for the exams. Please get in touch if you are curious about this work.
Canvas & the e-learning portal
The learning resources in MED’s national digital learning portal are popular among students. To make these resources easier to update and maintain for the academic communities, the resources are now being gathered on UiO’s learning platform Canvas. The goal is to provide students with more predictable and stable access to updated digital resources that are also universally designed. Please get in touch if you have questions related to your teaching subject.
