Background and Academic Interests
Anne Kveim Lie has been a professor at the Section for Medical Anthropology and Medical History, Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, UiO, since 2023 (associate professor at the same place from 2011). From 2009 -2011 she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the same place. She has a background in medicine (MD 1998) and intellectual history, and holds a doctoral degree in medical history from the University of Oslo (2008). In her research, she specializes in the history of medicine with a focus on the Scandinavia welfare states. Her work centers on the social and political dimensions of healthcare and medicine, and on the history of infectious disease and pharmaceuticals. Recently, her research has expanded globally, addressing contemporary issues like antibiotic resistance and climate change, through interdisciplinary projects that connect historical insights with pressing global challenges. Her research and teaching keep being informed by her clinical activity - as a General Practitioner in the Lofoten islands in Northern Norway in the summer and as a volunteer at the Healthcare Center for Undocumented Migrants during the rest of the year.
Teaching
She is a devoted teacher and loves teaching medical students. From 2012 to 2022, she was Program Chair for the program of community medicine in Medical School (public health, clinical epidemiology, social medicine, global health and the social sciences including history of medicine). Currently, she is head of teaching (Utdanningsleder) at the Institute of Health and Society. In her teaching, she aims at incorporating medical humanities and social medicine into healthcare training, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in understanding and addressing current health challenges. She was selected as one of the 10 best academic teachers in Norway in 2016, was awarded the University of Oslo Education Award in 2018 and the Olav Thon Foundation's National Award for Excellence in Teaching within the Natural Sciences in 2021.
