Promising findings from a new study on diabetes treatment

Promising outcomes for a new type 1 diabetes treatment involving the transplantation of genetically modified islet cells

In a clinical trial at Uppsala University Hospital, patients with type 1 diabetes have been offered transplantation with genetically modified hyperimmune insulin-producing islet cells without the use of immunosuppressive drugs for the first time in the world. The results from the first patient are promising.

The islet cell team at the Department of Transplant Surgery and the Department of Cell Therapy at Oslo University Hospital has contributed to producing these islet cells.
