Photo of perineuronal nets stabilize long-term memories
Some neurons are surrounded by a dense sugar coat, perineuronal nets (green) which limits plasticity in the adult brain. Bottom row show the development of the nets from postnatal day 12 to 30. Synapses on the cell body are located in the holes in the nets (Christensen, Lensjø et al., 2017).  Perineuronal nets stabilize long-term memories (Thompson et al., PNAS 2018).
